About

Courtartist is me, Art Lien. I've been sketching the courts since 1976, and for most of that time the U.S. Supreme Court has been my regular beat. I've been working almost exclusively for NBC News since 1980. Courtroom sketching is a form of visual journalism or reportage drawing that is slowly dying out. Where once upon a time news organization each had their own artist covering a story, today a "pool" artist often sketches for all. It is a demanding and stressful discipline where the drawing is often done directly and under tight deadline.

    Dear Art:

This message is from Carl “Quikdraw”. I received your web address from a lady at the District Court on C Street, N.W. She gave your Web address because I am interested in becoming a court artist also. I have been recently drawing court scenes in the court accross the street from the District Court. I would like to meet you and have a word with you about working together or maybe how I can get my foot in the door to do this kind of work. I’m currently training you kids the skill of drawing in my beginning drawing classes at Community Centers through out the Metro area. I have to go now cuz time is running out . Bye
